Testimonials - CR Dogs Hall of Fame
When I got my second dog Boone, I
did a lot of research and tried to pick
a breed with the traits that I was
looking for. I wanted a dog with a lot
of energy that would be interested in
a variety of activities. On paper a
German Short-Haired Pointer seemed
to be the perfect choice. I chose one
of the more rambunctious and social
pups from the litter and quickly saw
how hyper this dog was. He was easily
stimulated and unfocused. The puppy
stage was overwhelming to say the
least. Trainers Dave Walker and Hetty
Abma of CR Dogs warned me that this
breed was easily distracted (especially
by birds as nature had intended) and
the sport of Tracking, which I was
interested in, would be challenging.
We worked on Obedience and Tracking. Boone took to Tracking
and it
gave him much needed focus and an outlet for his energy.
We started tracking at 12 weeks of age and it seemed the only solution
to
tiring out his unlimited energy. Over the next 3 years we trained
with
CR Dogs regularly and his Tracking skills became stronger and he
did
surprisingly well. It was obvious how much he enjoyed this sport.
It was
often joked that Boone, in his mind, was a German Shepherd, a breed
known
to do well in Tracking. CR Dogs stressed the importance of a good
strong
foundation in training which was key. We enjoyed the bonding
experience of
regular training but we did have a goal in mind.
We decided to try out for the (TD) Tracking Dog title. In May 2009 one
month after Boone’s 3rd birthday, with odds against us, we proudly
passed
and received our ribbon for Tracking Dog. We plan to compete in the
next
level. Receiving a ribbon was very exciting but the true
reward was in the
fun and deep bond developed over the last 3 years.
