Search & Rescue Advanced
(Search Team K9 Members Ryker, Wile E. and Calypso)

   The Advanced Level  requires the K-9 team to:

   Area Search:

   Handler and dog will be required to search for a concealed person in a rural/
   wilderness environment. The search will include:Quartering- pattern and proper
   use of windBush and open area

   Approximately one square kilometer

   Approximately 2 hours to complete

   Agility:

   Working the dog on and off lead the handler will negotiate an agility course
   consisting of:

   4 hurdles not to exceed one meter in height.

   A culvert, maximum eight meters in length and maximum one meter in diameter,
  laid horizontally on the ground by going straight through without stopping.

   An “A” frame scramble ramp, minimum height of 1 ½ meters.

   Raised log/plank not less than two meters long and 20 centimeters wide, no
   higher than one meter off the ground

   A platform raised at least one meter off the ground.

   Article Search:

   Handler and dog will be required to search for and locate two medium-sized
   scented articles of clothing ( eg. a T shirt) or other items of similar size
   ( i.e. wood, metal, leather, etc.) in a rural/wilderness area.  Articles will be
   placed in a light concealment and will not be buried. The handler will be
   informed if a metal article is used.  One article must be cloth. 

   The search will include:Quartering- pattern and proper use of wind

   Articles concealed up to 24 hours prior to commencement to search (If metal
   articles are used then concealment time will be less than 24 hours prior to
   search).

   Approximately 200 meters by 200 meters area to be searched

   To be completed in 30 minutes.

   Obedience:

   The canine teams will perform the following exercises on and off lead and the
   handler using voice and/or hand signals

   Heel Off LeadJog at heel

   Sit at HeelDown at Heel

   StayRecall (Come from a distance of 15 meters)

   Stay on recalls

   Sit at a distance of 10 meters

   Down at a distance of 10 meters

   Finish- “heel”

   Evaluation of prey drive- demonstration of dogs desire to bring back a thrown
   article of the handler’s choice.

Search & Rescue Advanced
(K9 Wile E. in training exercise with local Police Agency)

   Tracking:

   At the completion of the course the dog and handler will be able to complete a
   track laid by a stranger started in bush and finishing in rural (Approximately ½
   track in each)

   2 Kilometers in length,

   Right angle turns (no less than 4 turns)

   One dead end turn

   4 articles, 

   Over urban/suburban/rural terrain

   At least 1 hour old

   3 cross tracks

   Approximately 20 meters on low scent area (railway, dirt, gravel)3 road
   crossings

   Human/animal scent distractions will be present. 

   The terrain will consist of urban/suburban/rural, which will include asphalt,
   dirt roads, gravel roads, and mixed vegetation.

   Age: 6 months to Adult
